The Narrow Base of Support (NBOS), prompted by the small size of the various platforms, atypically impacts the Hoop’s rotation and subsequent footwork.  Weighted Hooping is a full Body and Brain workout.  The music’s beats per minute (BPM), phrasing, space allowance and Hoop weight/size influence my improvisation.  Quickly, I transition from one step to another, as influenced by the lyrics and instrumentation.  I regulate my nervous system’s response to the motor demand with breathing, visualization and exaggerated miming.

Weighted Hooping is multi-faceted and so am I.

This week’s music selections evoked memories of my childhood with the images of my stepfather’s love of instrumental Jazz and my mother’s association with Jazz greats--- Nat King Cole, Joe Williams, Johnny Hartman, Dinah Washington and Count Basie at the Club Delisa.  My personal performance journey was tweaked with musical, dance and vocal aspirations.  So, to this day, I Perk Up, Smile, Laugh, Squeal and Dance to the various rhythms of 1940’s Jazz.  Such Joy is possible with Music and Movement!!!

Get up, Get out and Listen, Sing, Dance to Music---on a Daily basis!!!

Clinical Observations of Week One's Holistic Hoop Core-eography:

My Core Activation is fortified by Weighted Hooping with adduction of my legs and subsequent engagement of obliques, quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, gluteal and pelvic floor muscles.  Hooping with the different props, including elements of cushioning (proprioception i.e. weight-bearing, tactile, vestibular i.e. movement and kinesthesia i.e. sensing coordination), stability (wood), height (12" wooden stool), narrow base of support (space between treadmills), graded control (small rotary movements with focus on musicality, speed, accuracy, timing and instability (gliding discs, kidney-shaped lapboard and gluteal band) enhances the Athleticism, Improvisation and Comedic Experience of Hoop Dancing.

Today, I received an insight for the month of April 2022. I intend to create daily videos in which I Hoop in tiny spaces. My metaphor of Hoop-In-Place/Shelter-In-Place (HIP & SIP) began in March 2020, because of the Covid-19 restrictions.  The social isolation prompted me to create mini-Wellness videos for the viewers' Entertainment, Education & Healing. The evolution of the idea will demonstrate the creativity and capabilities of my Hoop Stylings, despite the constraints of space allowance.  The vertical, linear presentation of my Self dancing upon the surfaces reminds me of cursive writing. My message of Musicality and Movement is etched with curves, shapes and connections in the scene.


Throughout the thirty days, I will stage my One Take Shorties on small platforms with different costuming, rhythms, music and themes. All the while, I will focus on balance responses and equilibrium reactions---to avoid falling off my center. Here goes…
